David Falcon Interviews Mia Yim

Mia poses before RCW (4/23/11)

David Falcon caught up with rising wrestling star Mia Yim after her epic match with Sara Del Rey last Saturday, April 23, at RCW.  It's been eight months since David conducted his last Mia Yim interview (to mark her first year in indy wrestling).  So much has happened in Mia's wrestling career since then including a high-profile feud with Mickie James, two invitations to Berwyn -- one with SPARKLE and this past March with SHIMMER, and being asked to join The Embassy in ROH as Princess Mia.  You might say Mia is a hot commodity in the indy scene, her wrestling calendar is packed, and more exciting offers keep coming in.  David asked Mia to reflect on all of this in a conversation this week.

DF:  Twenty months ago, you stepped into the ring in an intergender tag match in North Carolina – small venue, provincial crowd, shaky ring, poor lighting – do you have any memories of that event?

MIA:  I remember I brought my High School friend with me, had a fun ride down and back. I still remember everyone in the locker room was really nice. The match itself, I like to look back at it and notice how much I have changed since. I have learned so much since then; I laugh about how horrible I really was back then.
Mia's first match in North Carolina (8/7/09)

DF:  Now, in the last four weeks you have been involved with two internationally renowned companies – SHIMMER and ROH – in two-day, marquee events either taped or broadcast live on iPPV.   Have you given any thought to how far you have come in a short time?

MIA: I like to give credit to everyone who have helped me. I was given the honor of being put in the ring with the best such as Sara Del Rey and Daizee Haze. I have expanded my training with CZW where I learned a lot more from The Blk Jeez (also my best friend in the business) along with training with Daizee Haze and Delirious at their ROH school. Those people have given me the chance to perfect my craft and they have assisted in my training; I give them a lot of credit.

DF:  On April 16 you had a big title match vs. Kacee Carlisle for the ACW belt.  It seemed like a great match, but you were on the losing end.  There are certainly women who have been around a shorter time and seem less accomplished in the ring, that have titles.  Has it bothered you that you have not yet won a title belt?

MIA:  Personally, I don’t really care about a belt. I am still new to the business, so I have no right to complain about not earning any belts. I am just honored to be wrestling and training right now at some of the best places.  A belt will come eventually, I am in no rush.

DF:  How do you feel about people who call you a “jobber”?  Mid-card wrestlers do have to pay their dues, right?

MIA: Let them call me a jobber. If I can make my opponent look good, then I have done my job. Like I said before, I am still new, I am not on the level of Sara Del Rey or Mschif . . . yet.

DF:  Most young wrestlers will say it’s not about the win-loss record as much as it is about the “body of work” in the ring.  What about your ring work brings you the most pride and satisfaction?

MIA:  The fact that I can get the crowd involved in the match, and keep them talking about my work. If they know who I am, then I am happy.

DF:  In hitching your train to Sara Del Rey and Daizee Haze in Philly, you have sided with the best in the business.  Certainly there has been local work with JAPW and RCW, etc. but there has also been that wider national and international audience because of Sara and Daizee’s association with SHIMMER and Ring of Honor.  Talk about working with and learning from Daizee and Sara and why your star is on the rise in SHIMMER and ROH.

MIA:  First off, let me say that Haze and SDR are tremendous workers and amazing people. They believed in me right from the start. They have both given me some of my best matches to date. I cannot thank them enough for their guidance. In training and in a match, I always learn something new with them. Those two are the biggest influences in my career.

DF:  Another young worker that is similarly connected to Daizee and Sara is Jamilia Craft.  Tell us about your friendship and your working relationship in the ring.

MIA:  Jamilia is so young, but so mature for her age. She is very down to earth and determined to continue training. She is definitely someone to watch out for. She is super sweet, and strong-hearted. I know for a fact that NOTHING can keep her down, she is truly a rising star. Jamilia and I trained with each other numerous times at the ROH school and I think we just have that chemistry in the ring. Beyond the ring, she is an awesome friend. I love being around her and traveling with her.

DF:  Share a story from the road.  Why are wrestling road trips so memorable?

MIA:  They are memorable because the people you ride with are memorable. I love riding in the ROH van because there are so many different personalities, you are guaranteed to be laughing the whole ride. I personally like to keep road stories to myself, let's just say it is always entertaining on the road ^.^

DF:  Share a story from the SHIMMER locker room.  Everyone seems in awe of the amazing talent at SHIMMER. Tell me something surprising or crazy that happens behind the curtain at SHIMMER.

MIA:  What happens in the locker room, stays in the locker room. I did witness Christina Von Eerie get jumped by SDR at the last taping, that was frightening.

DF:  This past March you moved from the SPARKLE card to the SHIMMER roster.  You and Jamilia had two tag matches, one against Regeneration X and one against Daizee and Tomoka.  What do you remember about coming out for that first match against SHIMMER boss Allison Danger and fan-favorite Leva Bates?

MIA:  Mama Danger and Leva were a real pleasure to work with. Leva has such terrific personality, it was like wrestling a cartoon! Being in the ring with Danger, I was worry free, I knew she would take care of us (Jamilia and I). She indeed is like the mother of the locker room. I hope to wrestle her more often, even if I lose them all ^.^

DF:  On Sunday, March 27, you “popped your Joshi cherry” going up against one of the smartest, most talented and well-respected women in Japan, Tomoka Nakagawa, and your PWR mentor, Daizee Haze.  If I’m not mistaken, it was your first time working in the ring against a current joshi great (Sumie Sakai notwithstanding). What do you remember about that match?  What did you learn from being in the ring with Nakagawa?

MIA:  This is one of my favorite matches. I have always dreamed of being in the ring with a joshi girl and it has finally happened. Not only that, Nakagawa was tagging with my trainer Daizee Haze so I already knew this match was going to be exciting. I felt like this match was another highlight in my short career. Something I certainly will never forget.

DF:  This past Saturday (April 23) you were in the RCW ring with Sara Del Rey, The Queen of Wrestling.  By my count you have had four singles matches, three tag matches, and a three-way match with SDR.  There are few wrestlers that you have had a longer history with or know better in the ring, it could have been “ho-hum” but there was a huge buzz about this match that built as the match went on -- why was this match so special?

MIA:  I think because SDR and I have wrestled each other so much, we just knew each other’s moves and tactics. We both brought out our best that night to give the crowd what they paid for. I mean with SDR, you kind of have to bring everything to the table to last in the ring with her. I feel as though I have worked SDR every quarter of my career. When I first started (third match into my career to be exact), 2010 in JAPW, and now 2011 at RCW so I feel as though the more I learn and improve, I have a chance at SDR to put my skills to the test. I like to consider this match as one of my favorites as well. I had an opportunity to put more holds on her powerful legs, break out the hurricanranas, and add more kick combos in this match. She overcame again, but I know it won't be the last I will see her in the ring. Much respect for her.

DF:  Some wrestlers that amaze me are Hailey Hatred, Dark Angel (Sarita), Rain and Jennifer Blake, because they have spent many months, if not years, in either Japan or Mexico working with wrestling promotions there.  It’s a bit like Sumie Sakai and Ayako Hamada have done in the USA.  When you finish college, could you see yourself living and working in Japan or Mexico, or do you prefer short trips (a la Serena) while spending most of your time in the States?

MIA:  I would love to move to Japan to expand my training after I graduate, but I honestly think that I will do the short trips. I most likely will have an IT job in the States, so I’ll probably only be able to do short term trips.

DF:  How will you use the time this summer to further your wrestling career?

MIA:  I will be going back to training at CZW and ROH four days a week all summer, along with doing more shows. Who knows, maybe I will go international…

Let’s play a free association game.  I will throw out a name that you know and you give me your thoughts on that person or thing.

The BlkJeez . . . Love him. My best friend. My trainer. I can tell we will have a long lasting friendship even after wrestling. I like to think that if I was a guy, I would be him :p
Mia with best bud The BlkJeez

Azrieal . . . Hola Papi!!! (Inside joke) Azzy is awesome!!!! I only spent like two times in the ring with him, but just those two times, he would teach me something new. Hanging out with him is always a fun time, we can joke about anything. He's just a fun guy to be around.

Mommy and her boyfriends . . . You know, I want my mom to be happy. She deserves it. I usually don’t mind when she has a new boyfriend, unless he looks like a little tool who can't defend her. I won't be living at home forever, I need someone who can make sure the my mom is with someone who will keep her safe. I can't have a loser who looks like he can't beat me in a friggin' fight. She had some boyfriends that I liked, but there is always that one or two that are just…ugh..fuck that noise.

Lee South . . . Lee South is truly a talented photographer. I love working with him. He spoiled me, I don’t even work with any other photographers except him. He is also very chill to hang out with. I consider him a friend. He always looks out for me and takes great care of me when I am in the area.

Chipotle . . . Best food everrrr!!! I can eat chipotle everyday if I could, horrible that it's close by my house when I'm on a diet though

Shelton Benjamin (Shelty) . . . LOL! Shelty is a loser butt. Jkjk, he's a real cool guy, cool enough that we can insult each other and still be civil. I hate how he gets lucky every time we play a game on Xbox though. I do however love being able to joke with him when we do meet.
Mia, Shelty, and the Joshi girls at ROH (Atlanta)

Marti Belle . . . Marti is my girl. Definitely a true friend. She has helped me through some tough times and I have done the same for her. I know if there were any issues where I need to talk to someone or get advice, she is always there. She is probably one out of two or three people that knows just about everything about me. I love her as if she was my own sister. I wish I saw her more.

BFF:  Mia and Marti

Beast mode . . . Beast mode is basically a code between The Blk Jeez and I meaning that we are ready to kill it at the gym. Go all out and go hard, spending a few hours at the gym. Yup…Beast mode :)
The BlkJeez and Mia getting into Beast mode

Southside Playaz Club (JAPW) . . . I love being a part of the SSPC at JAPW. From the ride up there, to the locker room, to the actual show, it is literally like a party. Those guys are a joy to be around, they already have the lovely ladies with them along with champagne (although I don’t drink). They just know how to have fun.

Sara del Rey v Mia Yim: Taking to a New Level

Sara del Rey v Mia Yim at RCW Supremacy
4.23.11  Baltimore  Photos by Marvin Atwell

Mia strikes a pose

Intended opponent Madison Eagles (photo: David Falcon)

This match was supposed to be Madison Eagles v Mia Yim.  I must admit that I was looking forward to Mia taking on the SHIMMER Champ 1 v 1 for several reasons:  (1) she had never faced her before and new opponents always bring out new responses from Mia  (2) Eagles is such a daunting physical specimen -- 6'1" pure muscle, with a mean streak, and a fearless athleticism that has her landing moonsaults and a devastating array of finishers.  When I heard Madison had been in a car accident and suffered a neck injury I was very concerned for her (get well soon, Madison!) and also disappointed that Mia would miss this match.  As Saturday approached a new opponent was announced, Sara del Rey, "Queen of Wrestling."  Sara is an awesome wrestler.  With Madison Eagles, Mercedes Martinez, and Cheerleader Melissa, they are considered the best indy workers today (all are featured prominently in SHIMMER weekends).  But Mia had faced Sara many, many times, so I was a little disappointed that this may be just another "Yim v SDR" match.  How wrong I was!  What I did not take fully into account, was that because Sara and Mia know each other so well, and because Mia has improved so much over the past six months, they are capable of pulling off an amazing match (in the way that Ayako Hamada and Ayumi Kurihara pulled off an incredible match on SHIMMER vol. 38).   So here's a summary of the action (to tide you over until the video comes out -- which I hope will be soon!)
Sara in full heel mode

Mia's green gear

Mia comes out to a cheer from the crowd.  She is a darling babyface and with her new Joshi attitude, she's cuter than ever.  Her hair has a summer blonde tint and she looks like she's just spent a week on the beach.  Mia is wearing her new green gear with the aqua-marine shimmer, white wrist tape and black knee pads.  Sara del Rey, also a California girl originally, comes out with a severe pissed-off expression on her face.  She looks like she wants to rip someone's head off.  She is wearing her blue tinted gear with the kickpads and black knee braces.
School boy

When the bell rings to start the match, Mia goes out to the center of the ring to shake hands, but Sara greets her with a boot to the face that stuns Mia followed by lightening quick power bomb. It's as if Sara wants to be done with this and go eat some crab cakes.  But Mia recovers enough to kick out.  Sara hooks Mia up for a german suplex, but Mia reverses into a waist lock momentarily; del Rey reversed back into a waist lock on Mia, she moves to lift Mia up for another german suplex, but Mia ducks out and quickly rolls Sara up for a victory roll finisher. The Queen of Wrestling kicks out. She gets up and the two circle each other.  Sara goes for a super kick but Mia ducks it and goes for a school boy pin.
Mia focuses on taking away Sara's powerful legs

Del Rey kicks out and staggers to the corner. Mia charges her, but savvy Sara slips to a drop toe hold that sends Mia crashing into the buckle. With Mia's head on the buckle, Sara kicks her hard and then picks her up for a flatliner.  Mia's world is rocked, but somehow she kicks out.
Mia's knee to Sara's face

At this point Sara goes into full-on wicked-heel mode.  She begins to mock Mia, kicking her, talking trash, and slapping Mia's head around the ring.  Sara then starts nudging Mia with her leg, but Mia reacts immediately, grabs her left leg in a wrestling hold and twists her knee. Sara is in a lot of pain.  This is in keeping with Mia's intelligent strategy for this match -- use your opponent's strengths against her -- it's an ancient judo principle to use someone's own force against them:  the victory roll, the school boy, and now the leg hold to weaken Sara's power base (SDR has the most powerful lower body in women's wrestling).  After Mia rides the leg for a while, Sara kicks her off.  Del Rey flexes the left knee and when she gets her feeling back, she gives Mia an ax kick and drops on top of her for a pin.  But somehow Mia kicks out.  Sara revs up her engines and whips Mia into the ropes, the crowd could feel her anger and frustration with the resilient, upstart, Mia Yim.
Sara tries to get her knee back

Sara grabs Mia by the arm and whips her off the ropes and sets up a superkick to the head, but Mia ducks her kick, and then lets the fans know why she -- Mia "Blasian Barbie" Yim, is a force to be reckoned with in women's wreslting.  Mia pivots and turns on The Queen with a step up hurricanrana! This she follows up with a deadly combo of snapmare, stiff kick between the shoulder blades, and a knee to the face -- BAM!!   Mia goes for the pin and the most memorable victory of her young career, but this is the Queen -- and she kicks out.  Mia is still stoked on her revival so she climbs to the top, but before she can execute a finishing move, SDR recovers climbs up and gives Mia a rolling kick.  That would unseat most workers, but not Mia, she stays up top.  But Del  Rey climbs up again she sets up for a superplex (a suplex from the top rope)!  BANG!  A devastating move -- surely this is the end for Mia.  Del Rey goes for the pin.
The Superplex!

Not only does Mia kick out, to the shocked delight of the crowd, but she locks on to Sara's knee again -- but this time the right knee.   Now Sara is in a world of hurt.  She is in intense pain.  She scratches and claws her way to the rope and Mia is forced to break the hold.  Mia picks her up and makes ready to whip her across the ring, but Sara reverses, they break, Sara goes to kick, Mia catches the leg, spins her around into her Spinning Seoul Kick to the face.  Mia, amazingly acsendant at this late stage in the match, again drops for the pin and the sweet taste of victory, but the Queen kicks out.  Mia again goes to the top rope to deliver the highspot move that will gain her the victory.  She dives toward Sara with a soaring cross-body-block, but Heel-par-Excellence, SDR, kicks Mia's knee in midair.  The great Sara del Rey then slams Mia for two successive german suplexes -- HARD -- and then wraps her into the brutal finisher the royal butterfly -- lift and SMASH!  Game over.  Mia succumbs:  1 ... 2 ... 3.
Mia stays on Sara's knee
German suplex

The buzz about this match was fantastic.  Lee Canfield called it "one of the best matches of the night."  Ryan Botwinik said, "Mia lost, but she did a great job!"  Justin Christopher Wile said, "You [Mia] and Sara freaking killed it. Best women's match I have ever had the pleasure of calling."
The aftermath:  Mia is defeated

Mia herself called it a "privilege" to be in the ring with the Queen of Wrestling.  In the first year of Mia's career, any encounter with Sara was a potential squash match, and if it was to go longer than five minutes, it's because SDR "carried" Mia to a better match.  Those days are gone, much to the relief of both wrestlers who not only have great mutual respect, but they also genuinely like each other.  Now, Mia's skill level, experience, and conditioning are such, that they can go toe-to-toe for 10 minutes and deliver the "match-of-the-night."  They have taken their feud to a new level, and from all accounts, it was a match-of-the-year candidate for 2011.  The lucky RCW Supremacy crowd was treated to a gem on Easter Eve.  The next time these two meet, I will drive 300 miles to be there!

Ayako v Ayumi: SHIMMER 38 Wrestling Wally's photos

One of my favorite matches of the SHIMMER weekend in march was the marquee match-up between the great Ayako Hamada and wildly popular Ayumi Kurihara.  The match was the capstone of Saturday, March 26, the opening day at the Eagles Club in Berwyn.  The match did not disappoint.  A back and forth affair with wild high spots and top drawer Joshi stiffness between two Joshi all-time greats!

I celebrate this match through the incomparable ring photographer, Wrestling Wally, who now makes his home in Kentucky and shoots midwest action now.  We miss Wally here on the East Coast, but it's great to know that he will still be a fixture in documenting the action at SHIMMER.  Enjoy these fine action shots!

ACW Women's Title Match: Kacee Carlisle v Mia Yim

April 16, 2011.  ACW (MD) Goldrush 2.
Mia Yim, the challenger

Mia Yim comes out in her new green gear with a new Joshi "babyface" attitude.  The crowd loves her.  A cake is brought out and the announcer leads the crowd in singing happy 22nd birthday to Mia.  halfway through the song, Kacee Carlisle has heard enough, she comes storming out of the locker room and destroys the party atmosphere.  The ladies lock up and someone rings the bell.  Mia ends up on top of Kacee and gives her a fireman's carry into an arm bar.  It's going to take a lot more than an arm bar to strip the championship belt off of Kacee Carlisle.  Mia realizes that Kacee won't tap so she goes for the cover.  Kacee kicks out.  Mia gives Kacee some forearms to the chin and then whips her off the ropes.  The champ reverses the move into a Somoan Drop.  At this point both women are heated and things get really stiff.  Kacee begins to choke Mia, then chops her once, twice.  Mia retaliates with a forearm smash.  Kacee is now pissed -- she lights Mia up with a series of lightening fast chops that sting like a belly flop off the high dive.  As if that's not enough, Kacee returns to the choking and finally punctuates this beating with a vicious clothesline.  She goes for the cover, but Mia kicks out.

Kacee Carlisle, ACW Women's Champion

Kacee climbs to the second rope to "end this thing right here" and goes for a massive leg drop, but Mia rolls out from under it.  Mia then goes into a high-aerobic series of drop kicks, at least five or six of them, and ends with her patented missle drop kick.  The momentum has shifted and now Mia climbs to the top rope and unleashes a withering missle drop kick.  She goes for the cover 1...2... but Kacee kicks out in the nick of time.  Mia now gets exorcised and starts firing at the champion.  Kacee responds with a jaw-rocking forearm smash and then they start exchanging blows in the middle of the ring.  Mia is screaming with each blow she delivers to Carlisle as if bent on burying her.

Kacee gives Mia a stiff kick in 2010

Mia finally gains control and whips Kacee off the ropes, but Kacee reverses and tries to deliver the "coup de grace" with a tree-limb sized forearm.  But Mia ducks it, waits for Kacee to turn around, and then pounds her with more forearms.  Yim drives Carlisle back into the corner and the beating continues.  When she has softened her up adequately, Mia whips her across the ring to the opposite corner and goes charging after her with a pounding body slam, but with the deftness of a matador, Kacee steps aside and Mia crashes into the corner, stunned.  Kacee seizes the opportunity to roll Mia up and get the 3-count (though she had her feet up on the ropes for leverage).  Ironically this was exactly the way she defeated a much more limited Mia Yim in EWE one year ago (4/24/10), Mia's first match back after surgery.  The same roll-up and the same cheating finish -- legs on the rope for illegal added leverage on the pin.  In neither case did the ref catch the infraction and the pin stood up for the win.  By my reckoning, Mia is owed a good ref at the next meeting between these two.  I don't believe Kacee can beat her fair-and-square.

What a Difference a Year Makes: Yim v Carlisle

Kacee bullies Mia in ACW

Sometimes taking a look at history can be instructive.  It's my opinion that Mia Yim is the best young wrestler never to have won a title.  Mia has been wrestling professionally for just over 20 months (beginning in August of 2009).  Now, one day shy of her 22nd birthday, she will be in contention for a championship belt for only the third time.  Mia is a girl who has always had big dreams and is one of the smartest and most talented young wrestlers on the indy scene today.  Why do I say that?  Consider these points:

1) She trained for nearly a year before setting foot in a professional ring.  Why?  She wanted to be prepared.  She wanted to get it right.  All aspiring young wrestlers should learn from Mia's example on how to prepare yourself for the ring.

Mia v Mickie in NEW, fall 2010

2) She worked locally with good people; took what work was available; became committed to strong companies with excellent mentors.  She worked in the Chesapeake Bay area with VCW, ACW, and smaller companies in Virgina and West Virginia.  But when she got her break with JAPW, she hit a home run and endeared herself to Sara Del Rey who was one of her fierce advocates when she was only six months into the business.

3) She made the decision to get breast aumentation surgery in order to keep her options open for top TV promotions like WWE and TNA.

4) She continued to train with men and desired to work with men in training and in the ring.  This shows that she acknowledges where the expertise and money is in the sport and wants to learn from the best so as to be a more dominant competitor against female opponents (and not intimidated by male opponents).

5) She became known as a hard worker and a fan favorite on the indy scene between D.C. and NY.  Therefore she got gigs with RCW and NEW and eventually CZW, SHIMMER, and ROH.  In these affiliations, Mia has worked Daizee Haze, MsChif, Mickie James, Sara Del Rey, Annie Social, and recently the likes of Allison Danger, Leva Bates, and Tomoka Nakagawa.  There are few 22-year-old wrestlers that can post an opponent list like that!

6) She is willing to manage/valet with CZW and ROH in order to keep her options open for ring work and in order to make strong wrestling world connections with promoters and wrestlers.

7) Apart from a TNA tryout last June, she has resisted the temptation of the two big promotions due to her desire to finish college and get her degree.  I admire this greatly and think she has her priorities exactly right.

Kacee chokes Mia in EWE 4.24.2010

For all these reasons and more, Mia Yim has catapulted herself to the first rank of challenger who can legitimately contend for the JAPW, RCW, ACW, or SHIMMER title.  At this point all of these would be a reach except the ACW title that she challenges for tomorrow night in Baltimore, MD, versus Kacee Carlisle.

Back to our history lesson.  The only time that Mia has faced Kacee in a 1 v 1 match was nearly one year ago, on April 24, 2010, when she was just coming off her implant surgery and had a tender chest and plenty of ring-rust.  They battled in EWE and Kacee squashed Mia who looked great but could not put up much of a fight.  The match would have been lucky to last 5 minutes.  Tomorrow will be a whole different matter.  Mia is in top physical condition and has faced more high-profile opponents in the last year that the highly experienced Kacee has.  Mia is poised to battle an indy icon for 10 minutes or even 15 minutes and take home her first title belt.  it's not guaranteed to happen, but mia has never been better situated to take a championship, or more well prepared to do so.  I believe she is due to win and I predict that on her birthday, Mia will be the ACW Women's Champion.

Mia makes her entrance vs. Kacee (EWE)

It's a big moment for both women -- it's Kacee's first title defense -- and I wish I could be there in person to see the action.  Congratualtions to ACW who have a great card!  not only do they have a mouth-watering women's championship match, they also have a phenomenal main event with Sabian taking on Shelton Benjamin -- Bam!

Mia taking and delivering a bump after her surgery
